Four Important Insurance Products for College Graduates

College graduates should consider health insurance, renter’s coverage, auto insurance and life insurance as part of their strategy for financial resiliency.

Background

Insurance is the glue that helps put lives back together when things go wrong.

You cannot drive a car without insurance protection. You cannot buy a home without it and renters insurance helps you move forward after problems occur. You cannot take the risk of starting a business without the peace of mind that insurance brings. Yet, many people consider these coverages optional. Some are unaware that insurance provides liability protection in addition to repair or replacement of physical damage to property. In many cases, people cannot afford to be without insurance, especially since damage or injuries would come out of pocket without proper insurance protection.

The Insurance Communications Video Challenge is open to any registered student organization (RSO) at a public or private university or community college in the U.S. An RSO is defined as a student-run club or association that is officially sanctioned by the academic institution and organized around a shared cause or interest. Student organizations choosing to enter the video challenge are encouraged to form a collaborative team to ensure the entry reflects collective skills and demonstrates team effort.

Entry and faculty advisor

Each RSO may submit only one entry, along with an application form. (See attached form.) A faculty advisor must be listed on the application, agree to oversee the project and sign off on the application, video submission and contest release and waiver. The faculty advisor for the organization will be the main point of contact. Applications and submissions must be sent by the specified dates. Participants must adhere to the university’s code of conduct.

AWARDS

Fund the work your student organization wants to do next.

As the sponsors, it is the intent of ICM and APCIA to award funding for RSOs to be used for student engagement, attendance at educational functions both on and off campus or to cover general expenses of the organization. The funds will go to the university organization, not individual students.

1ST PLACE CHAMPION

$5,000

The winning entry will be awarded a prize of $5,000 to be paid directly to the student organization.

RUNNER-UP AWARD

$2,500

A second-place submission will be awarded in the amount of $2,500 to the student organization.

Winning video entries will be posted on various industry social media platforms, credited to the content creators. Submissions will remain the property of APCIA for the purposes of consumer education.

SELECTION PROCESS

Judged by insurance industry professionals

A panel of three to five judges from the insurance industry will evaluate the entries. Judges will evaluate the submissions independently based on criteria of effectiveness, clarity of content and creativity. Judges will then meet to compare their assessments and choose the award winners.

What is the purpose of this video challenge?

This video challenge is designed to inform recent college graduates about the four types of insurance protection they should consider to build financial resiliency as they build careers. Insurance is the glue that helps put lives back together when things go wrong. You cannot drive a car without insurance protection. You cannot buy a home without it, and renters insurance helps you move forward after problems occur. You cannot take the risk of starting a business without the peace of mind that insurance brings. Some people are unaware of the liability protection that comes with an insurance policy; it’s not only about repairing or replacing lost or damaged property. Most people cannot afford to be without insurance.

Auto insurance, renter’s insurance, health insurance and life insurance are important considerations. We encourage students to include all four in their video submissions.

The competition is open to any Registered Student Organization (RSO) at an accredited university or community college in the U.S. An RSO is defined as a student-run club or association that is officially sanctioned by the academic institution and organized around a shared cause or interest. The Insurance Communication Video Challenge is subject to Official Rules which can be found here.

No. This challenge is intended to be collaborative, so student organizations are encouraged to form a team to take advantage of collective skills. Of course, each RSO may consider hosting an internal competition within the organization in which teams work on separate projects – and then vote on the best one to submit to the challenge.

The completed video entry must be no more than 3 minutes in length, and submitted in either a .mp4 or .mov file format. The final graphic on the video submission should include the logo of the university, along with the name of the RSO and a link to the organization’s website and/or preferred social media channels. An official Entry Form and printed script of dialogue used in creating the video entry must also be submitted with a video entry.

The competition is sponsored jointly by the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) and the Insurance Careers Movement (ICM). APCIA is the primary national trade association for home, auto and business insurers. ICM is a grassroots organization created to inspire people to consider insurance as a profession.
